Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty means surgical beautification of the eyelids. This is commonly done as rejuvenation procedure for the aging face. This operation can be done for upper eyelids as well as lower eyelids. Wrinkles and skin folds along with bagginess of the lower eyelids can be corrected by lower blepharoplasty. Here excess skin is removed by making a transverse elliptical incision. Orbicularis oculi muscle fibres are then divided and sub orbicular fatty deposit trimmed. Repair is done in layers with very fine stitches. This operation reduces the skin wrinkles and also the bagginess. After a few weeks the surgical scar gradually fades and becomes imperceptible.

For younger patients with bagginess without significant skin wrinkles trans conjunctival blepharoplasty is a better option. Here external skin incision is not given, but access is done from inside the lower eyelids. Then excess fat is trimmed just like in transcutaneous external blepharoplasty. Sometimes fat grafting is also required for correction of tear trough depression which is some time seen below the bagginess.

Upper lid blepharoplasty can similarly done for wrinkles or skin folds of the upper eyelids. This operation is commonly done under local anesthesia and as day case. That is no hospitalization is required.
